Student arrested for sending threatening emails to institutions in Romania - 1

The Court of Appeal in Bucharest has ordered a 30-day arrest for a 17-year-old student accused of sending threatening messages to schools, hospitals and other institutions in Romania in recent days, FOCUS reported.

Dozens of schools and hospitals have received ominous emails with a text in which the sender states that on Monday morning he will enter armed with two guns, will commit mass murder, and when the police come, he will commit suicide.

"You all deserve to suffer, I suffer every day, I hate my life, so it's time for you to feel the same. I can't wait to kill you", reads part of the threatening message.

The police managed to identify the author of these emails - a 17-year-old student from one of the schools in Bucharest.

The young man has been accused by DIICOT (the specialized structure for combating terrorism and organized crime) of committing a crime — "threat of a terrorist nature".

According to prosecutors, the student received help from a 14-year-old girl to send messages to around 1,000 institutional email addresses.

"From the evidence collected in the case, it is evident that on September 21 and 23, 2025, the accused, together with a 14-year-old minor, sent numerous messages to approximately 1,000 email addresses of educational institutions, medical facilities, police departments, television stations and other institutions throughout Romania, in which threats of carrying out armed attacks were made, with the aim of creating panic and intimidating the population by exerting a strong psychological effect", the DIICOT statement said.

Investigators also found that the young man already had "problems with the justice system", reports Agerpres.

The document mentions that in December 2024, the student was wanted on an international arrest warrant issued by a judge in New York for multiple crimes: conspiracy to commit crimes against the United States, sexual exploitation of a minor, receiving and distributing child pornography, extortion, threats to use weapons of mass destruction, and terrorism of a cross-border nature.
