A specialized operation by the Traffic Police started today at the Kulata Border Crossing Point and other border crossings. The goal is to check foreign-registered trucks that have undelivered or unpaid fines. The operation is the result of the synchronization of the automated systems of the national toll management and the Ministry of Interior.
"After the toll management systems detect trucks, mainly with foreign registration, which are driving with undelivered/unpaid fines, they are stopped, the drivers are given the opportunity to pay the fines through a POS terminal on site or are explained how to pay them by bank transfer", explained Senior Inspector Georgi Buchkov from the Traffic Police, Blagoevgrad Regional Directorate of the Ministry of Internal Affairs.
Only from 8 am to noon, 13 drivers were stopped for driving with unpaid fines. The most striking case is of a Romanian driver with 26 undelivered fines totaling 3,960 leva, which he will pay by bank transfer, added Senior Inspector Buchkov.
In case the drivers refuse to pay the fines, the authorities apply more serious measures.
"If our officers establish a violation on the spot, they issue a fine with a slip. According to the latest amendments to the Traffic Act, if the driver does not pay on the spot, a coercive measure is applied against him by removing the car's license plate and confiscating the registration certificate until the fine is paid," explained Senior Inspector Buchkov.
According to representatives of the Ministry of Interior, these actions are a step towards greater collection of funds from fines imposed on cars with foreign registration. The implementation of the measures will continue with the participation of officers from other structures of the Ministry of Interior.
