This is not a garbage crisis. This is a clash of two worlds – the old one, in which a few with nicknames and influence dictate the rules, and the new one, in which people want transparency, order and justice. I could have let things happen as they have been happening so far - the easiest thing is “that's how it was“.
I chose not to allow the people who have been trampling the city and the state for decades to be able to twist the hands of Sofia residents now.
This is what he called for on "Facebook" the mayor of Sofia Vasil Terziev.
Not because I am a hero, but because each of us must find the courage to say “enough“.
This battle is not mine. It belongs to every person who does not want to live in lies, in fear and in the poverty they produce. To everyone who wants to be a citizen, not a subject. To everyone who does not want to be made a serf in their own country or a forced emigrant.
I am hopeful because I see how the city is waking up.
I see the mobilization – in the team, among the volunteers, among the citizens who clean, help, share, insist. I saw it during the “crisis” with transport orchestrated by the same scriptwriters. It is happening now. People see, hear and understand what is happening.
My greatest pain has always been that somewhere along the way of the systematic crushing of our people, we forgot what it means to be a society - to help each other, to work together not only in a crisis, but every day, so that we do not reach a crisis. The last few days give me hope that this feeling is returning. That we can once again become a strong and healthy society. To look not for what divides us, but for what unites us - the future of us and our children. I saw neighborhoods where people organized cleaning themselves while we waited for the companies that are trying to blackmail and subjugate the city. People who did not speak to each other yesterday, today were cleaning side by side.
This is the Sofia I believe in. Sofia of the awakened, the active and the capable.
And let me say something important: the enemy is not as strong as it seems. It is not smarter, stronger or better than us. It simply relies on one thing – that we are divided, afraid and disillusioned. To believe that there is no point. But when we wake up, when we speak and act together, it loses its power instantly. They feed on a power that is born from our silence.
Today we have a choice – to give up and allow fear, apathy and disbelief to crush us again, or to choose to be citizens,
who believe that change starts with ourselves. It doesn't matter whether we are left or right, rich or poor, pro-European or more skeptical – what matters is that we all want one thing: to live in a normal, honest and free city. Now is the time. Not to save someone's political career – I have something to do with my life. And to save the faith that we can build a common future, that we are not alone, that we can stand up without waiting for a savior.
Each of us can be a hero in this situation, not a spectator. Choose to be one. The real power is within you. The enemy has money and influence, but we have one thing that they will never have - community, dignity and faith.
One Sofia. One people. One choice - not to give up.
