Two men have been detained in the town of Elin Pelin during an investigation into the burglary of gold jewelry from an apartment in the capital's "Nadezhda" district and a car parked in front of the apartment building. The arrest was carried out during a specialized operation by the "Vehicle-Related Crimes" sector of the Internal Affairs Directorate, the press center of the Ministry of Internal Affairs announced, BTA reports.
The investigation began on October 2, after the owner of the apartment filed a report about the theft of gold jewelry, car keys and the car itself parked in front of his home. Within a week, forensic experts managed to establish the identity of the perpetrator.
A 52-year-old man with criminal records was detained in Elin Pelin while offering a local resident, also known to the police, to purchase the stolen “Volkswagen Jetta“, equipped with license plates from another vehicle, declared wanted.
According to the investigation, the 52-year-old man acted in Sofia and in the country and was involved in both the theft of the car and that of the gold jewelry. He has been repeatedly detained for thefts of cars, belongings and parts thereof, as well as for burglary of homes and illegal possession of weapons. He has been convicted.
The alleged buyer is 44 years old and is also known to the law enforcement agencies for concealment of property. Both were detained for a period of up to 24 hours, and the investigation of their criminal activity continues.
The information was confirmed by the head of the “Crimes related to Motor Vehicles“ Chief Inspector Nikolay Peltekov, who announced that for the first nine months of 2025, car thefts in Sofia decreased by 48% compared to the same period in 2024.
