Georgi Zahariev: Millionaires in Bulgaria will increase by the end of the year, but in 2026 the trend will reverse - 1

402 new millionaires in 2025 in our country. There are also 858 more deposits, in which there are from 500,000 to 1 million leva. This is shown by the data of the Bulgarian National Bank.

The founder of the “Financial Academy“ predicts that the number of wealthy Bulgarians will grow by the end of 2025, but next year the trend will reverse due to increasing taxes and social security contributions. On the air of “Your Day“ on NOVA NEWS Georgi Zahariev commented that the statistics on the number of new millionaires in our country are inaccurate and misleading.

„A millionaire is a person whose assets, minus loans and everything he owes to someone, as well as minus the value of his own home, exceed one million. If calculated this way, there are probably more millionaires in our country than the official data shows“, explained Zahariev.

According to him, current calculations often include current accounts that do not represent real deposits or investments. “These are operational accounts with which people cover current expenses, not long-term assets. So the real picture is different“, the expert specified.

Zahariev predicts that by the end of the year the number of people with high net worth will increase, but from 2026 the trend will reverse. “I expect that next year there will be fewer millionaires, due to the lifting of tax and social security burdens“, he said.

The financier noted that a large part of Bulgarians still prefer to keep their money in bank deposits. “It strikes me that Bulgarians like to lose money. Every lev that sits in a deposit and does not work for us loses value. Over the past five years, inflation has been the biggest scourge on savings“, stressed Zahariev.

According to him, the value of bank deposits will continue to decrease, as people will gradually direct their funds to other assets. “I rather expect that this money will be invested – in real estate, funds or other forms of capital. The government is currently not proposing a sustainable tax system, and the upcoming adoption of the euro brings uncertainty,“ he further commented.

According to Georgi Zahariev, only 7-8% of Bulgarians invest, with most choosing real estate.
