Karakachanov: Bulgaria's energy independence is threatened - 1

The Chairman of VMRO warns that Bulgaria is rapidly moving towards an energy collapse. The data for January 2026 from the Energy System Operator are eloquent. Electricity consumption in Bulgaria is increasing (about 300,000 MWh for January 2026 compared to January 2025), while production is decreasing.

"The production of base power plants has decreased by 12.5% compared to January last year. Our export-import balance has deteriorated by 462%. This means that Bulgaria is starting to turn from a net exporter into an importer of electricity. We are becoming increasingly dependent on expensive electricity imports. This is clearly visible on the Bulgarian Energy Exchange, where MWh prices are double and triple compared to last year", said Krasimir Karakachanov and added:

The lack of sufficient production and, accordingly, expensive electricity for Bulgarian business leads to the loss of our energy sovereignty. From an exporting country, we are turning into an energy dwarf country in the Balkans. Expensive electricity makes us uncompetitive, hits Bulgarian business, leads to an increase in the prices of goods and services. The reason - wrong, irresponsible, amateurish policy in the energy sector. In the cold January days, it is clear that if it is not for the TPPs, we are gone.

Bulgaria is threatened with losing its energy independence, because because of the stupid “green deal“ they want to close our coal-fired TPPs as well. They provide about 30-35% of the mix in the energy system, and they are also balancing capacities. Instead of producing electricity and selling it, they have brought us to a situation where we have to import expensive electricity.

Bulgarian energy - coal and gas-fired thermal power plants, is a victim of the European carbon quota scam. This is a financial and accounting fraud, which, however, is paid for by Bulgarian citizens to steal from the Ursulas in Brussels. Carbon quotas are “air money“. We must declare as soon as possible that as a state we will not pay this blood tax to Brussels.
