The mayor of Omurtag Eshref Eshrefov took office again during a meeting of the Municipal Council in the city today.

Gergana Tsoneva handed him the symbols of the city of Omurtag in the presence of 22 councilors.

The municipal administration explained to BTA that Eshref Eshrefov is the acting mayor. There are authorized departmental deputy mayors who carry out administrative and organizational activities and can represent the Municipality in front of third parties, added the lawyer in the administration Vladislava Petrova.

„Thanks for the support received from the voters. I have taken the oath for the second time, regardless of the circumstances I am facing. (b.a. Eshref Eshrefov is under house arrest). This does not happen every day and to every person. But I just have to show that I am ready to fight for the residents of the municipality, for justice in all its aspects, for a better future for our children and grandchildren, Eshrefov told those present.

He assured that he will continue to work for the benefit of the residents of the municipality, together with his team, “no matter how many difficulties lie ahead, no matter how many pitfalls appear”.

In order to come to the building of the municipal administration, he received permission through a decree of the Sofia City Prosecutor's Office. In the decree held by Eshrefov's lawyers, dated March 22, 2024, it is written that he is allowed to leave his residence between 9:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. on March 27, 2024 and take an oath in the Omurtag Municipality building.

The reinstatement of Eshefov came about after a recount of the votes in three sections in the municipality of Omurtag from the vote in the fall, in compliance with a decision of the Supreme Administrative Court of March 7, 2024. After the new count of the votes in three sections commissions - in the villages of Mogilec, Belomortsi and Omurtag, the Omurtag Municipal Election Commission issued a decision stating that Eshref Eshrefov remains the mayor of the municipality.

His candidacy was put forward by the local coalition "Union of Democratic Forces - NDPS", recalled OIC Deputy Chairman Omurtag.
