With a commemorative ceremony in front of the monument of Baba Tonka Obretenova on the street of the same name in the city, people of Rus gathered to honor 131 years since the death of the great revolutionary woman.
“Baba Tonka is one of the symbols of our city. She remains in the history of Bulgaria, in the consciousness of our community, as an image of the mother who gave her best for Bulgaria, for its freedom and independence. With her case, even today, she continues to challenge us to think about what each of us gives for the Motherland”, Mayor Pencho Milkov addressed the audience with these words.
The commemorative event was honored by the deputy mayor Encho Enchev, the chairman of the Municipal Council Academician Hristo Beloev, the deputy regional governor Georgi Georgiev, the Rector of Ruse University “Angel Kanchev” Prof. Dr. Plamen Kangalov, representatives of state and municipal institutions, municipal councilors and citizens.
His Eminence Bishop Makariy of Glavinitsa, vicar of the Metropolitan of Ruse, and priests from the Holy Metropolis of Ruse held a funeral prayer in memory of Tonka Obretenova.
The commemorative event was attended by the Municipal Brass Band, the Youth Guard Squad at the Municipal Youth Home, as well as Hristo Kostov, a 5th grade student from Hristo Botev Secondary School.
The host of the ceremony was the actor from the Drama Theater “Sava Ognyanov” Vencislav Petkov.
