In North Macedonia a repetition of the rule of Nikola Gruevski is emerging - the previous prime minister from VMRO-DPMNE, who ruled for 11 years (2006 - 2017), when again in words there was a desire for the country's membership in the EU, but policies were being conducted of provocations and annoying the neighbors.
This is what Prof. Naum Kaichev, professor at Sofia University and deputy chairman of the joint historical commission between Bulgaria and the Republic of North Macedonia (RSM), told the BNR.
"The fear of constitutional changes is being used to block the relations of the RSM with Bulgaria and the EU. It is rather an excuse to pursue a policy that is not pro-European".
He emphasized that the victory of VMRO-DPMNE in the elections was expected and the attitudes were "to prepare for an emerging majority, at the center of which will be this opposition party":
"It was gaining strength and after seeing the inability of the rulers in many respects, including in fulfilling their commitment to implement the European decision from 2022, to effectively start the EU membership negotiations, for which demand changes to the Constitution".
Assoc. Kaichev recalled that the RSM is a member of NATO and a country that has declared its desire for EU membership, therefore his prediction is that "massive geopolitical changes are not possible and the fluctuations that could happen under the next rulers will have only a temporary character".
