In recent weeks, a significant increase in salmonellosis cases has been observed in Varna. At the same time, in Bulgaria there is a double and even greater increase in the number of people infected with Covid-19 compared to the previous week. This information was provided by Prof. Iva Hristova, director of the National Center for Infectious and Parasitic Diseases (NCCPD), in an interview with the Bulgarian National Radio (BNR).
„That means 69 cases in a week, and last year there were 32. No big wave is expected, but they will continue to grow, although they will not go far. This is Omicron, there is no change in symptoms and no increase in the level of hospitalizations, but it is still a serious disease,” explained Prof. Hristova.
According to her, Covid-19 begins with throat irritation, pain, cough, runny nose and the virus-specific fatigue that prevents the performance of daily duties. The virus does not stay only in the throat, but enters the blood and causes systemic complaints. There are possibilities of complications related to the entry of the virus into the blood and damage to the inner lining of the blood vessels.
Prof. Hristova explained that the wave of new cases of Covid-19 is mainly due to the Omicron variant, which continues to dominate. Although there is no new change in the symptoms of the disease, the increasing number of cases is a serious indicator of the spread of the virus. Prof. Hristova noted that there was no increase in the number of hospitalized patients, which is a positive sign, but increased attention is still needed.
In conclusion, Prof. Hristova urged citizens to be careful and observe the recommended precautions. She reminded that salmonellosis and Covid-19 are serious diseases that require timely diagnosis and treatment. Compliance with hygiene norms and social distancing measures continue to be key to preventing the spread of these diseases.
