The flock of sheep infected with smallpox in the village of Zhelyo Voivoda is expected to be destroyed today after laboratory analyzes have confirmed the presence of infection in the animals, BNR reported.
This will likely happen this morning, when a mobile emergency response team is also expected to arrive. The Regional Administration announced that the animals will be killed in a humane way, BNR specified.
The entrances and exits of the village of Zhelio voivoda are guarded by the police. Trucks and light trucks are checked for compliance with the ban on transporting live animals. Disinfectant strips of straw have also been made on the road. The infected herd is currently being guarded by the police. It has about 150 sheep. There are already dead animals in it that have not been put away. People in the village commented that because of the constantly appearing animal diseases, soon there would be nothing to grow in their yards.
All other animals in the village are confined and not allowed to graze freely. They are about to be sampled.
By order of the regional governor Chavdar Bozhurski, a three-kilometer protection zone and a ten-kilometer surveillance zone were created around the outbreak of the infection, which includes eight settlements from the Sliven and Yambol regions.
