Prime Minister Dimitar Glavchev welcomed today's signed contract for safety analysis for licensing alternative nuclear fuel for unit 6 of the Kozloduy NPP. At a meeting at the Council of Ministers, the Prime Minister congratulated the Minister of Energy Vladimir Malinov, the President of Westinghouse Electric Company Patrick Fragman, the company's Senior Vice President Aziz Dag and the President of Nuclear Fuel of Westinghouse Electric Company Tarik Choho for their good work.
„Thanks to the fruitful cooperation with our American partners, we have made tremendous progress towards our common goal – to make Bulgaria's energy independent, which is of utmost importance for the energy security and future of the country and the entire European Union“, Prime Minister Glavchev noted.
Earlier today, the Kozloduy NPP and Westinghouse Electric Company signed a contract for the safety analysis and licensing of a new nuclear fuel assembly project for Unit 6, which contributes to the diversification of fuel and energy independence of Bulgaria. The agreement is part of a broader partnership that also includes the supply of alternative nuclear fuel for Unit 5, thus the plant is making progress in modernization and safety. “Westinghouse“ emphasizes its leading role in the supply of innovative and sustainable fuel technologies that improve efficiency.
During the meeting, Prime Minister Dimitar Glavchev noted that the signing of the contract between the Kozloduy NPP and the and “Westinghouse“ is one of the many successful projects of the caretaker cabinet. He emphasized that despite all the difficulties, the cabinet continues to work effectively, with priority being placed on key initiatives for the country related to energy security and independence. According to him, this project is evidence of the government's purposeful work for the benefit of Bulgarian citizens and the economy.
The participants in the meeting also discussed the progress achieved within the caretaker cabinet in the implementation of the project for the construction of new nuclear capacities at the “Kozloduy” NPP site. It was recalled that on 4.11.2024 an engineering contract was signed for the construction of new 7th and 8th units between the “Kozloduy – New capacities” EAD and the consortium “Westinghouse HD“.
“With the construction of units 7 and 8 of the “Kozloduy“ NPP, the state will continue to purposefully pursue its goals related to the development of nuclear energy, the production of which is emission-free, fully compliant with the EU criteria for the Green Deal and accessible to consumers”, Prime Minister Glavchev was categorical.
Prime Minister Dimitar Glavchev drew attention to the fact that for our country it is extremely important to fulfill the requirement for a minimum of 30% localization (inclusion of local companies) of the project, during its implementation in all its phases.
