From January 1, a specialized police operation is coming, which is aimed at drivers who have consumed alcohol or drugs, are behind the wheel without a license or are driving at an inappropriate speed. Prevention "has a positive effect".
"Our colleagues will try to guarantee the safety of citizens by not allowing violators to get into their cars after using alcohol or drugs". This was stated on Nova TV by the deputy head of the "Traffic Police" at the General Directorate of Traffic Safety, Commissioner Maria Boteva.
The checks carried out by the "Traffic Police" are more and, respectively, more violators have been identified. "What people are most often interested in is – Are our speed cameras working? There are over 300 technical devices that actually automatically monitor speed violations, regardless of whether it is day or night," warned drivers Maria Boteva.
„What is noticeable between December 20 and 29 is that there are more accidents in populated areas than outside populated areas. But due to factors related to the higher speed outside populated areas – in accidents there, the trauma rate is higher. This trend has persisted in recent years”, explained Commissioner Boteva.
„Since the beginning of the holidays and weekends, that is, the period between December 20 and 29, we have reported fewer drivers caught behind the wheel after using alcohol or drugs, compared to the same period last year. I should note that the number of traffic police teams monitoring violators is even greater compared to 2023, she reported.
In her words, prevention is "giving a positive effect". "Of course, the efforts we make, and the citizens who show self-awareness - all these are complex measures that give a positive result," she emphasized.
