With 17 votes "for" the SJC unanimously terminated the procedure for selecting a new Prosecutor General, reports Nova TV. The plenum convened for an extraordinary session today, after the amendments to the Judiciary Act entered into force.
According to the new texts, the SJC, whose mandate has expired, cannot elect a prosecutor general or chairmen of the two supreme courts. Borislav Sarafov will remain acting Prosecutor General for another six months.
Before the start of the session, the Minister of Justice Georgi Georgiev made a comment on the topic. "I expect the SJC to terminate the procedure for selecting a Prosecutor General today. It is no coincidence that I immediately called an extraordinary meeting so that the members of the Council could have a say,” he said.
„I want to draw attention to something. Some politicians are talking about suspending the procedure. This is false. This is misleading. There is a difference between suspending and terminating a procedure. Because when it is suspended, it can continue. This procedure must be terminated. This means that it goes down in history. The next one can be held by the Supreme Judicial Council with new members elected, in accordance with the requirements of the law", explained the Minister of Justice.
"An extremely important priority in the work of the Ministry of Justice is the task given by Prime Minister Zhelyazkov - to work on saving the money under the PVP. Our department also has commitments on it. I do not want disputes under the Mediation Law to be an obstacle to submitting such a bill to the National Assembly", Georgiev was categorical.
