Electricity production in Bulgaria has increased by 20.2 percent since the beginning of the year, reaching 10,239,425 megawatt hours (MWh). This is shown by the operational data of the Electricity System Operator (ESO) for the period January 1 - March 16, 2025 compared to the same period in 2024.

However, consumption also increased, albeit more moderately - by 8.77%, to 9,707,797 MWh.

The balance of exports and imports has changed significantly - from a negative value in 2024 to (minus 406,530 MWh) to a positive balance of 531,628 MWh in 2025.

Baseline power plants have increased their production by 21.25%, reaching 8,470,358 MWh, according to ESO data.

Renewable energy sources (RES) in the transmission network also recorded growth - by 31.36 percent, with the largest increase being reported in photovoltaic power plants (PVP) - 60.47 percent. However, wind power plants (WPP) and biomass reported a decline of 9.78 and 20.12 percent, respectively.

A similar trend is observed in RES in the distribution network - the total growth is 31.55 percent, with PVP again recording the largest jump - 65.3 percent. In contrast, wind power plants reduced their production by 14.36 percent, while biomass recorded an increase of 13.23 percent.

For the period from January 1, 2025 to March 16 of this year, compared to the same period last year, hydroelectric power plants (HPPs) were the only segment with an overall decline - they generated 472,160 MWh, which is 13.56 percent less than the previous year, ESO data also show.
