Hundreds of residents of Belashtitsa protested in front of the private clinic in Plovdiv, where the 6-year-old child died after being anesthetized during a dental procedure, NOVA reported.
Under the motto "Justice for Angel", relatives and friends of the family gathered in front of the private dental clinic where the boy lost his life on April 4. They carried posters with the inscriptions "medical negligence kills", "negligence took Angel", "court for Angel's murderers". Among those who joined the discontent are many mothers with children, teachers from Angel's kindergarten, as well as residents who sympathized with the tragedy. The protesters tried to storm the clinic and demand an explanation from the owner and manager about what had happened. The police did not let them in, after which water bottles flew and several windows of the clinic were broken.
As a sign of sympathy with the protest and the tragedy of the parents, the police took off their hats, and their action was greeted by the gathered people with thunderous applause.
One of the organizers of the protest - Rositsa Ivanova, was categorical - going to the dentist cannot be a risk to life. "All those responsible must be held accountable, you cannot take your child to have his teeth treated and he will come out in a coffin. We want an effective sentence for those responsible for the child's death - because there should have been doctors to keep him under observation, and not for him to be without nurses and an oxygen mask for 2 hours. "Irresponsibility, arrogance and negligence have been demonstrated," she said.
The protesters demanded legislative changes - mandatory allergy tests for every child up to 18 years of age before anesthesia, cameras in the operating rooms of private and public hospitals, as well as effective sentences for Angel's doctors. According to NOVA, the manager is in the clinic building.
Angel's mother demanded that the nurses who did not provide assistance to her child in time give her a public explanation. In the early afternoon of Saturday, the protesters headed to the home of the anesthesiologist who participated in Angel's surgical intervention. Along the way, they stuck posters with the boy's face on the prosecutor's office building.
Anesthesiologist Dr. Plamen Mandev did not respond to the calls of Angel's father to come down to the protesters. They put up posters with the boy's face on the building where his home is located. People threatened to return and protest in front of his home next Saturday.
We recall that in early April, a 6-year-old child from Plovdiv died after dental treatment. Angel had cavities and pulpitis. After several dentists refused to treat him, the parents agreed to have this happen under general anesthesia.
And so far, no one has an answer to the question of why the boy was anesthetized for 4 hours. According to regulations, a general anesthesia in a dental office can last up to 180 minutes. If necessary and at the discretion of the doctors - it can be longer. However, the patient is monitored in a special room in the hospital the entire time, including several hours after coming out of anesthesia.
The district prosecutor's office in the city has opened pre-trial proceedings for medical malpractice. And a few days ago, on NOVA, the boy's parents stated that the ridiculous death was caused by a series of mistakes, and according to them, no preliminary consultation with an anesthesiologist was made. They demanded that the culprits be punished.
The District Medical College of the Bulgarian Medical Union in Plovdiv issued an official position.
The District Medical College of the Bulgarian Medical Union - Plovdiv expresses its deep sympathy and sincere condolences to the family of the deceased child. The loss of life, especially of a child, is a tragedy that shakes the entire society and raises serious questions for all of us - doctors, institutions, parents and citizens.
We understand the pain and indignation of the relatives, as well as the public's desire for clarity and responsibility. We also insist on a full, objective and impartial investigation of the case by the competent authorities. Only through facts and the law can the causes and possible blame be established, and trust in the healthcare system be restored.
At the same time, we express concern about the increasing cases of public pressure and stigmatization of medical specialists, including visits and protests in front of their homes. The principle of the rule of law requires that all responsibility be sought in an institutional manner - through investigation, expertise and court, and not through arbitrariness. Threats, aggression and psychological harassment of doctors do not lead to justice - they undermine the foundations of society and compromise the right of every patient to calm, professional medical care.
The District College of the Bulgarian Medical Association - Plovdiv calls for responsibility, reason and compliance with the law. We believe that only through institutional order, transparency and respect for human dignity can we overcome this crisis and prevent future tragedies".
