The national referendum proposed by President Rumen Radev on the adoption of the euro is categorically unconstitutional.

This was announced in an interview for the program “This Morning“ by Assoc. Prof. Borislav Tsekov, lecturer in constitutional law.

The head of state proposes that the question of the national referendum be “Do you agree that Bulgaria should adopt the single European currency, the euro, in 2026“

“This issue has already been decided, the arguments in the decision of the Constitutional Court (CS) from last year in connection with the signature of “Vazrazhdane“ are categorical. They are not a matter of interpretation, but are indisputable“, added Tsekov.

He recalled that the question of whether and when the euro will be introduced in Bulgaria was resolved 20 years ago with an international treaty – the accession treaty with the European Union.

According to him, it is the accession treaty that answers the question of when we should join the eurozone – something that is contained in the president's proposal for a referendum question. The answer is: “When we meet the convergence criteria and this is established by the European institutions“.

According to him, there is no way that after 20 years Bulgaria can unilaterally resolve this issue.
