Over 80 percent of Bulgarians define reading books as important. 43 percent admit that they have not read a single book in the last year. This is shown by a study by the sociological agency "Trend", commissioned by "24 Chasa", dedicated to how much and what Bulgarians read. The study was conducted between May 12 and 18 of this year through a direct semi-standardized "face-to-face" interview with a tablet among 1,001 people over the age of 18.
The majority of Bulgarians - 83 percent - consider reading books important, and the main reason for those who do not read is the lack of interest, followed by the lack of time, BNR lists. Only 9 percent have read more than ten books in the last year. 61 percent prefer paper books, 21 percent - electronic ones, and 4 percent of Bulgarian citizens listen to audiobooks.
According to the study, 30 percent do not read books at all. These are mainly the elderly, the poorly educated and the residents of villages.
The respondents indicated that the most preferred genres are crime novels and thrillers, contemporary fiction, historical novels, classic literature and finally romance novels.
Readers most often choose books after a recommendation from a loved one. This is indicated by 49 percent. Slightly more than a quarter orient themselves by titles in bookstores, and almost 19 percent rely on information from social networks.
11 percent trust information in the media, and 7 percent follow recommendations received in a learning environment or at work.
