A 43-year-old woman from Shumen who was incapacitated got behind the wheel drunk and caused a traffic accident, and her car flipped over. The incident occurred shortly after midnight on May 27 on Vazrozhdenets Street in the regional capital. The woman was trapped in the accident and could not get out.
Police, ambulance and fire teams were dispatched to the scene of the accident. Upon arrival, they found that a Volkswagen had overturned. The firefighters rescued the woman and took her to the ambulance for treatment.
The police determined that the woman had been driving after drinking alcohol. The breathalyzer recorded 1.50 ppm in the exhaled air. She did not provide a blood sample for analysis.
The car is owned by a 41-year-old man from Shumen. The 43-year-old woman was detained for up to 24 hours at the police station in the regional town. A rapid investigation has been initiated for the crime committed, the Ministry of Interior's Office - Shumen added.
A total of 761 road accidents were registered in Shumen in 2024. Of these, 599 involved material damage, and the remaining 162 were serious.
