With his latest actions, President Rumen Radev has categorically demonstrated his determination to fight to the last against Bulgaria's European future, chosen decades ago by national consensus. To this end, Radev allowed himself to use the institution inspired by the constitution to represent the unity of the nation, against all other state institutions with the sole purpose of creating conditions for Bulgaria to be diverted from the chosen path of modernization and a European future, in order to be pushed into the post-Soviet sphere of influence. This is stated in their position by "Blue Bulgaria" and add:
With his policy of dividing Bulgarian society and instilling hatred and dividing lines among Bulgarian citizens, Radev has created serious and imminent risks for the unity of the Bulgarian nation and for the security of the Bulgarian state.
Awareness of this requires:
Analysis and assessment to prevent a repetition of the mistakes that led to the election of a president with the profile and goals of Mr. Radev.
Developing a consensus and disciplined implementation of a strategy to prevent a repetition of this scenario.
For Blue Bulgaria, the starting points in forming such a consensus are:
Setting a goal for the next president to be a person who protects the Bulgarian national interest, with pro-European and democratic understandings for the future of Bulgaria. This is the definition of enlightened patriotism. Any other goal setting would be a waste of meaningful public energy and a fruitless political effort with disastrous consequences for our Fatherland.
Seeking support and allies and positioning oneself against opponents along only one clearly drawn line of choice. This line must stem from the legal powers of the president, which are mainly related to foreign policy and security. Initially, a clear positioning on these issues gives society a clean and understandable choice. And vice versa - drawing multiple dividing lines would be artificial and unfounded, given the powers and competence of the institution - would break support and create grounds for partisan voting. It is precisely such actions in the previous elections that led to the election of Mr. Radev.
The presidential candidate of such a political and public consensus should not be a party creature, but a public figure with a clear and consistent position in defense of the national interest and the civilizational choice of Bulgaria, as part of the democratic world. Anything else would mean that a given party, through its own candidate, is trying to co-opt a certain circle of voters and make them its own. Once again, this is how Radev was elected!
The role of the political parties that stand behind such a consensus is to declare their firm support for a unifying national candidate who will represent us worthily in our European family, and to work for his election. Beyond that, throughout the entire process, the parties must put aside narrow party calculations in order to avoid confrontation along the dividing lines between them. The differences between all the parties that will unite around a worthy candidate for Bulgarian president are obvious and important. They remain and are valid because they are the real driver for the direction of our national policy. These differences and the mobilization of support for them are the subject of the parliamentary elections. Now the task is different. The problems that governments and MPs solve cannot be solved by the president, and therefore his election should not fall victim to this misunderstanding.
"Blue Bulgaria" will seek dialogue for the implementation of such a strategic framework and will work to elect such a president.
