The Chairman of the Sofia Municipal Council, Tsvetomir Petrov, proposes the creation of a working group, whose task will be to analyze and prepare for amendment the normative acts of the Sofia Municipality in connection with the positive convergence report of the European Commission and the introduction of the euro from January 1, 2026 in Bulgaria.
The composition of the working group will be voted on at today's meeting of the Sofia Municipal Council.
We are talking about numerous ordinances, regulations and other acts in which municipal fees, taxes and prices of services are set in leva. With the introduction of the common European currency, all values of local taxes and fees need to be converted from leva to euro.
The Sofia Municipality must set an example that prices will not increase, but rather the opposite – the best solution for citizens will be found and gave an example with the public transport ticket, says Tsvetomir Petrov.
"Now the price of a single travel ticket is 1.60 leva. After conversion, it turns out 82 euro cents, but agree that the amount will not be convenient for passengers and I think that the rounding should be in favor of Sofia residents, namely 80 euro cents. So in practice we will even talk about making the service cheaper, but of course, all this is in the field of proposals. For now, colleagues from the working group must analyze all the prices of municipal fees and how this will affect the budget," commented Petrov.
