Stormy wind swept through Northern Bulgaria - 1

In Pleven, eight liters of rain fell per square meter in six minutes during a summer storm. This was reported to BTA by the director of the branch of the National Institute of Meteorology and Hydrology in the city, Martin Machev.

He added that the wind that preceded the rain was 13-14 meters per second.

Such an amount of rain in such a short time means extremely intense rainfall, Machev explained. He noted that the wind was gusty and said that in the "Kaylaka" park he noticed fallen trees. The strong wind broke branches throughout the city. Citizens are also reporting this on social networks. In the center of Pleven, the cleaning of fallen branches has begun.

The regional spokesperson for the Regional Directorate (RD) of the Ministry of Interior in Pleven, senior expert Mariana Tsvetkova, told BTA that there were no injuries or people in distress. They are receiving signals that are being processed.

A BTA reporter saw that traffic on “Grenaderska“ Street in the section after the intersection with “Georgi Kochev“ Boulevard has been stopped to clean the road from fallen branches.

The heavy rain and fallen leaves led to blockage of sewer manholes.

Damage in the municipalities of Novi Pazar, Shumen and Hitrino was caused by strong wind and precipitation, the press center of the regional administration reported.

There are settlements that are without electricity, the teams are working to eliminate the breakdowns in a short time. At the moment there are no problems with the water supply, the press center of the regional administration in Shumen specified.

As BTA reported a little earlier, hail fell over Shumen after a storm accompanied by strong winds. After the storm passed in the late hours monitored over Shumen, it continued to rain, but in a large part of the sky above the city there were no rain clouds. There was no information from the Regional Directorate of the Ministry of Interior that there had been any reports of accidents to which rescue and firefighting teams had responded, but sound signals were heard from several specialized teams.

A stormy wind knocked down branches and trees in the Ruse region. There is no information about injured people. This was reported by the deputy regional governor of Ruse, Georgi Georgiev.

The hydrometeorological station in the Danube city told BTA that wind gusts briefly reached 86 km/h this evening in Ruse.

Georgiev explained that numerous reports of fallen trees and branches had been filed in the regional city and in the region. There was also damage to vehicles. A fallen tree broke the windshield of a moving heavy-duty truck near the exit of Ruse in the direction of Sofia, which led to the formation of a queue of waiting vehicles.

Crews are working to remove fallen trees and branches from roads in the area.

Due to the strong winds, the Danube Bridge near Ruse was also temporarily closed to traffic. The traffic was stopped after a van, used as a resting place for workers carrying out major repairs on the Bulgarian section of the facility, turned around and blocked both lanes of traffic.
