The oil and gas company BP intends to provide the British Museum with more than 63 million USD to repair and reconstruct the premises, some of which are in poor condition, reported newspaper The Daily Telegraph.
The largest corporate donation of its kind in the UK will help the renowned cultural institution, founded in 1753, deliver its "master plan" for reconstruction. This will primarily affect those halls where, in particular, the Rosetta Stone with 3 identical texts and sculptures of the ancient Parthenon temple are located.
Some of the rooms in one of the world's largest and most visited cultural institutions are more than 200 years old and in urgent need of repair, according to Charlie Mayfield, head of the Bloomsbury Building Redevelopment Committee in London. The west-side room where the Elgin marbles are on display is notorious for leaks and has become damp, the newspaper noted, “so much so that Greek Culture Minister Lina Mendoni has previously said that keeping ancient works of art in this room is just an insult".
