Google will build a new data center in the city of Canelones worth 850 million USD, announced Eduardo Lopez, President of Google Cloud Latin America, in material.
Google's Uruguayan data center will become the second in this region. The first in Latin America was built in Chile in 2015. In this regard, Lopez noted that one of the main goals of Google's development in the region at this stage will be the wide introduction of services based on artificial intelligence technology, amid the growing search for them among the local population.
In this context, the head of the regional division of Google Cloud also announced the intention of the corporation to strengthen ties with Uruguayan universities and research centers. Thus, in this country, the company already collaborates with the Technological University and the University of Montevideo in the field of introducing technology into educational courses. On August 14, Bloomberg, citing sources, reported that the US Department of Justice may resort to breaking up Google to fight the corporation's monopoly on the market of search engines. According to him, the department also intends to seek a ban on Google entering into exclusive agreements with customers, which would allow it to remain a monopoly among search engine operators.
The District of Columbia Federal Court previously ruled that Google abused its market position to maintain a monopoly in search engines and Internet advertising. The court ruled that Google locked up about 90 percent of the Internet search market from competitors by striking a deal with electronics maker Apple that made Google's search engine the default search engine in its Safari web browser. The corporation has entered into similar agreements with equipment manufacturer Samsung and mobile operator Verizon.
