„Bulgaria will do everything necessary to preserve “Ancient city of Nessebar“ on the UNESCO World Heritage List”. This was stated by the Minister of Tourism Evtim Miloshev during his meeting with the Assistant Director General for Culture of UNESCO Ernesto Ottone at the headquarters of the international organization in Paris. He emphasized that our country is working on the implementation of the recommendations of the World Heritage Committee with a view to preserving the status of “Ancient City of Nessebar” on the World Heritage List. The meeting was also attended by Irina Kae, director of the cultural heritage department and Françoise Aubert, adviser on cultural policies in the organization, and on the Bulgarian side – Radka Balabanova-Ruleva, Ambassador of Bulgaria to France and Iskra Angelova, Deputy Permanent Representative of Bulgaria to UNESCO.
Minister Miloshev thanked for the high recognition for our country with the decision of the World Heritage Committee that Bulgaria will host the 47th session of the Committee in 2025 and confirmed the strong commitment of all interested institutions to work for the good preparation and organization of this extremely important and authoritative international forum.
„As a country with a thousand-year history and culture, Bulgaria is becoming an increasingly attractive destination for tourists from all over the world. Our rich cultural and historical heritage is one of the main factors for this interest," Minister Miloshev said during the meeting. One of the main highlights of the conversation was the development of cultural tourism in Bulgaria as an important and long-term priority. “We are working actively, together with the Ministry of Culture and personally with Minister Nayden Todorov, for the preservation and promotion of Bulgarian sites under the auspices of UNESCO, but also for the inclusion of new sites in the organization's world heritage list,” Minister Miloshev pointed out.< /p>
In the coming years, the organization and the Bulgarian state will have serious work on two projects: the creation of a category 2 Regional Center for Underwater and World Heritage in the city of Sozopol, with a focus on the study, preservation and promotion of the underwater heritage in the Black Sea region and the construction of the world arts center on the island of “St. St. Cyric and Iulita“ near the town of Sozopol. Minister Miloshev recalled that the island preserves different historical layers and represents a unique interaction of past and present. High appreciation was also expressed for its enormous potential, which, with the support of UNESCO, could be developed and upgraded to become an attractive cultural center for the entire region of exceptional importance.
The Minister of Tourism also emphasized that the inclusion of the Episcopal Basilica of Philippopolis in the UNESCO list is a cause for which the Ministry will continue to work and protect.
