Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez said he would propose a ban on the purchase of homes in the country by foreigners from countries that are not members of the European Union (EU). “We will also propose a ban on those foreigners from non-EU countries who do not live in Spain or whose families do not live here and who are in reality simply speculating on these homes and these houses“, the prime minister said, speaking to supporters of his party.
On January 13, Sanchez announced that authorities planned to introduce restrictions on the purchase of homes by foreigners from countries that are not part of the EU. According to him, Spain will increase taxes for this category of buyers - up to 100% of the value of the property.
As the president of the National Federation of Real Estate Associations of the kingdom, José María Alfaro, explained, this government measure will not affect homes purchased before the initiative came into force.
The problem of access to housing in Spain is regularly discussed in the country. This is due to the sharp increase in the cost of both buying and renting apartments and houses. Earlier, the authorities also decided to stop accepting applications for golden visas from April - granting residence permits to foreigners in exchange for large investments.
