Before his election, US President Donald Trump called the Gaza Strip "prime real estate" in a telephone conversation with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. and asked the head of the Israeli government to consider what types of hotels could be built in this territory, the Wall Street Journal (WSJ) reported, citing sources.
According to the publication, the conversation took place in the summer of 2024, but then Trump did not express the idea of \u200b\u200bpossible establishment of direct US control over the Gaza Strip.
The newspaper notes that this is not the first time that Trump has discussed foreign territories and the political issues associated with them in terms of the real estate market. Another source told the WSJ that Trump told Volodymyr Zelensky about his interest in Odessa and other Ukrainian resorts for tourism development. Trump had a similar conversation with the country's leader Kim Jong-un about the possible construction of hotels in North Korea during his first term as president.
The newspaper also cited the contents of an audio recording it has of Trump's speech at a closed-door meeting with donors during his last election campaign. Commenting on his 2019 decision to recognize Israeli sovereignty over the Golan Heights, he said: “I've been to the Golan Heights. You know, this thing is worth 2 trillion USD in real estate. But it costs a lot more."
Earlier, at a joint press conference with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu after talks at the White House, Trump saidthat the United States was considering the issue of long-term ownership of the Gaza Strip, its reconstruction and its transformation into a “Middle Eastern Riviera“. He also noted that he considered it possible for Gaza residents to relocate to other Arab countries.
