With the arrival of the holiday season and the increase in travel, the topic of home security is becoming more relevant than ever. In “Wake up“ the head of the “Crimes against property“ sector to the Ministry of Internal Affairs Ivan Raichev and the chairman of the National Union of Locksmiths Andrey Sapundzhiev revealed how they work together against crime and what the latest trends in home burglaries are.
The partnership between the Ministry of Internal Affairs and locksmiths
The police and locksmiths work in close coordination, with experts in locking systems often assisting in solving crimes and training law enforcement officers.

„In many situations we work together. It's mainly about home burglaries. We help our colleagues from the Ministry of Interior, we train their employees to be more effective when they encounter a crime - home burglary“, explained Ivan Raichev.
Statistics: A decrease in burglaries by over 20%
The data of the Ministry of Internal Affairs show a positive trend in the number of registered burglaries in the capital.
“Registered burglaries are decreasing. Statistics show that last year (the same period) there were 692, while currently there are 540. This is about a 22% decrease in this type of crime“, Raichev announced. He added that the detection rate of these acts is about 14-15%, which is a good achievement considering the difficulty of detecting this type of crime.
How to prevent robbery?
Experts are categorical that prevention starts with choosing a quality lock. Andrey Sapundzhiev drew attention to the massive omission of citizens - to think about their security only after they become a victim of a crime.
„Unfortunately, we observe that people wait for the theft to happen and then look for a better lock. The goal of our campaign is precisely this - to lock and secure doors in a timely manner, and not after the theft has occurred“, shared Sapundzhiev.
Social networks and public awareness
One of the most important tips from the police for the holidays is related to our behavior on the internet.
“Information should not be posted on social networks that people are absent from their homes“, warned Ivan Raichev.
A special information poster has also been distributed in Sofia and in public transport, through which citizens can find out what type of key they have and whether it provides reliable protection. The goal is for people to feel protected while celebrating peacefully with their loved ones.
