The movie "The Next Room" of Spanish director Pedro Almodovar won the "Golden Lion" at the Venice Film Festival, dariknews.bg reported.

The ceremony was broadcast live on the forum website.

The winner of the prize was announced by the president of the jury of the 81st edition of the film festival - the French actress Isabelle Huppert. 21 titles competed for the grand prize.

The drama "The next room" is Almodovar's first English-language film and had its world premiere in Venice. Starring actresses Gillian Moore and Tilda Swinton. They play estranged girlfriends who meet in their teenage years while working at a magazine. Later, however, their paths diverge. Ingrid, played by Moore, writes novels, Martha, played by Swinton, becomes a war reporter. And now, after years of separation, the two meet again... Almodovar focuses on questions of life, death and friendship.

The Spanish director thanked the two actresses for their participation in "The Next Room". "This award really belongs to them, it is a film about two women and those two women are Gillian and Tilda," Almodovar said, quoted by Reuters.

The Grand Jury Prize at the 81st edition of the Venice Film Festival went to the production Vermigilio by the Italian director Maura Delpero.
The "Silver Lion" Best Director went to Brady Corbett for The Brutalist, starring Adrien Brody.

The special prize of the jury was awarded to the production "April", the work of the Georgian director Dea Kulumbegashvili.

Cup "Volpi" the best actor in a male role went to Frenchman Vincent Landon for his performance in the drama Jouer avec le feu, directed by Delphine and Muriel Culin.

Best actress was awarded to Nicole Kidman for Wabygirl by director Halina Rein. The actress didn't attend tonight's ceremony in person, but Raine read a message on her behalf from the stage, and it was revealed that Kidman's mother had passed away. "Shortly after I arrived in Venice, I learned that my mother, the beautiful, brave Janelle Kidman, had passed away. I'm in shock and I need to be with my family. This award is for her," the actress' letter says.

The "Marcello Mastroianni" award for the best debut was awarded to the Frenchman Paul Kircher for his role in "Their Children After Them" (Leurs enfants après eux) by directors Ludovic and Zoran Bukerma.

Italian actress Sveva Alviti hosted the ceremony last night.
