Happy birthday to the poet-politician Edvin Sugarev - 1

On today, December 27, the poet and writer Edvin Sugarev turns 72. Author of numerous poems, novels and journalistic works, Sugarev has established himself as one of the most prominent figures in today's Bulgarian literature. In addition, he also made his steps in politics, after becoming an activist with the advent of democracy.

There are individuals whose names are inextricably linked to both art and hot social and political topics in the country. Edvin Sugarev is one of them – poet, public figure and dissident, who left a lasting mark both in literature and in the history of the transition in Bulgaria.

Born in 1953 in Sofia, Edvin Sugarev graduated from Bulgarian Philology at Sofia University “St. Kliment Ohridski“. Even during his student years, he was passionate about literature, philosophy and creative criticism. His views quickly established him among the intellectuals who prepared the ground for the changes in the late 1980s.

Sugarev began publishing poetry in the 1980s, quickly distinguishing himself with his emotional and innovative expression. His poems are mainly a reflection on social contradictions and personal searches for identity, characteristic of an era of political restrictions and censorship. His style ranges from lyrical and figurative verses to open civic poetry aimed at awakening readers.

In the years of late socialism, Edvin Sugarev established himself as a dissident, sharply criticizing the lack of freedom of speech and the repressive nature of the government. He became one of the emblematic authors of the “samizdat“ publications, which were distributed secretly and gave voice to the ideas of democratic change.

After 1989, Sugarev came to the forefront of political life in Bulgaria as a deputy and public spokesman of the democratic forces. His fiery speeches in parliament and sharp articles in the press are a symbol of the new era, marked by the pursuit of freedom and democracy.

Although he is widely known for his political positions, Edvin Sugarev also remains a poet dedicated to art. His works, although often marked by civic themes, do not lose their lyricism and depth. He continues to write poems, essays and journalism, establishing himself as one of the key figures in contemporary Bulgarian literature.

In addition to poetry, Sugarev also deals with translations, actively working to popularize world literature in our country. At the same time, he does not hesitate to express his opinion on a number of cultural and social issues - often provoking, posing uncomfortable questions and demanding responsibility from institutions and individuals.

One of the most distinctive features of Edvin Sugarev is his constant readiness to take a clear position. Over the years, he has participated in a number of protests, hunger strikes and public actions aimed at combating corruption and injustice in society. Even when he harshly criticizes political leaders and public figures, he does so guided by his conviction that a true intellectual must be a corrective to power and a moral pillar.

Today, Sugarev is considered one of the most significant representatives of the intellectual opposition to totalitarianism, as well as of the generation of artists who paved the way for modern Bulgarian literature. His books and public work continue to influence younger authors and activists who are seeking a path to freedom and independent thinking.

His life remains an example of how a person can be both a creator and an active public figure, to stand up for his beliefs even in difficult times and to use the power of speech as a form of resistance and hope for a better future.

Edvin Sugarev is a person who combines poetic talent and civic valor. Whether you read his poems, journalistic texts or remember his political activities, you will always feel one thing - his unwavering spirit and faith in the power of words.
