The planned restoration work at the Lenin Mausoleum will not affect the main hall, the press service of the Russian Ministry of Culture reported.

The department has signed a contract for 19.6 million rubles to carry out emergency and restoration work at the Lenin and Stalin Mausoleum on Red Square in Moscow, according to data from the state procurement portal.

“The planned work does not affect the main hall“, the department said in a statement. The deadline for completing work under the state contract is set for August 27, 2026, the Ministry of Culture added. The procurement documentation notes that the Mausoleum is a cultural heritage site of federal significance, located in the very center of Moscow, at the foot of the Kremlin Wall.

The building is currently used as a museum exhibit. The administrative premises are located in the space under the stands. The building consists of three floors, including one underground, with a total area of almost 3.2 thousand square meters. The state historical and cultural expertise of the scientific and design documentation was carried out in 2024. The act provides a complete history of the Mausoleum.

In 1953, the sarcophagus with the body of Joseph Vissarionovich Stalin was placed in the Mausoleum. During this period, there were two stone inscriptions on the facade of the Mausoleum: “Lenin“ and below “Stalin“. On the night of November 1, 1961, Stalin's body was removed from the Mausoleum and reburied near the Kremlin wall. A year earlier, in August 1960, the Mausoleum of V.I. Lenin and I.V. Stalin was placed under state protection as a historical and cultural monument with the name that remains to this day.

According to the expert report, the main damage observed at the site included displacement of external cladding panels made of natural stone and their separation from the load-bearing wall structure; biological damage to walls and roof panels due to insufficient ventilation; displacements in the frame structures; peeling paint on the external walls and roof panels.
