The mayor of Paris Anne Hidalgo and the Municipal Council in the French capital unanimously voted to rename a square near the Pont Neuf (New Post) in honor of Christo and Jeanne-Claude, according to a message on the Facebook page maintained by the foundation managing their legacy, NOVA reported.
The square around the statue of Henri IV, previously known as "Place de Pont Neuf", will be called "Christo and Jeanne-Claude".
The two met in Paris in 1958, and their partnership began there, both creatively and personally.
Christo passed away at the age of 84 on May 31, 2020 in New York. His wife and creative partner Jeanne-Claude passed away at the age of 74 in 2009.
The couple caused a sensation with their large-scale and fleeting installations. One of the most famous among them is the Wrapped Reichstag in Berlin in 1995.
This year marks the 90th anniversary of the birth of Christo and Jeanne-Claude, to whom the June issue of the Bulgarian Telegraph Agency's (BTA) LIK magazine is dedicated. Hristo Yavashev, known as Christo, was born on June 13, 1935 in Gabrovo. Jeanne-Claude was born on June 13, 1935, but in Casablanca, Morocco.
It is no coincidence that the place that will bear the name "Christo and Jeanne-Claude". This year marks the 40th anniversary of the two artists' project to wrap the Pont Neuf in Paris. On September 22, 1985, Christo and his wife Jeanne-Claude wrapped the structure in 40,000 square meters of fabric tied with ropes.
In 2025, there were two more anniversaries related to Christo and Jeanne-Claude's projects. In February, it was 20 years since the realization of "The Gates" - 7,503 fabric-wrapped structures that Christo and Jeanne-Claude installed in 2005 in New York. In June, it was 30 years since the wrapping of the Reichstag in Berlin.
