Unknown thieves broke into 14 safes at a branch of a German bank in Stur, Lower Saxony, police said, DPA reported.
Authorities are at a loss as to who the perpetrators are and what they stole. "We can't say anything about the contents", a police spokesman said. "We don't know what the bank's customers kept there", he added.
Customers at the bank branch told DPA that the case was reminiscent of a robbery in Gelsenkirchen in western Germany after Christmas.
In late December, thieves in Gelsenkirchen broke into a vault over several days using a special drill from a nearby underground car park. They broke into over 3,000 safes and made off with millions in cash, jewelry and valuables.
In Stur, everything happened much faster, the police spokesman said. The attackers struck on Friday during the lunch break between 12 and 2 p.m.
The unidentified attackers apparently entered the basement through a window. They headed straight for the safe room, broke down the door and emptied some of the safes.
According to the bank, there were 718 safes in the room, 14 of which were broken into and robbed. "All other safes are intact," the bank said.
Police suspect the perpetrators did not have enough time to break into other safes.
