In Poland, alcoholics have been granted the right to monthly compensation.
The news was confirmed by a representative of the Social Insurance Institute to RIA Novosti.
“Now, persons suffering from alcoholism and therefore unable to work are entitled to monthly compensation“, he said.
According to the agency's source, the amount of compensation depends on the degree of impairment caused by alcoholism. The ZUS representative specified that the monthly compensation is 1,971 zlotys ($530.8) gross for complete disability. For partial disability, the compensation will be 1,478 zlotys ($398) gross.
The source noted that to receive this compensation, it is not enough to simply declare alcoholism; medical documentation containing information about the diagnosis and treatment attempts is required.
He also said that the administration expects to allocate about 50 million zlotys (approximately $13.5 million) annually for payments of “alcohol benefits“.
Previously, Poland's Deputy Foreign Minister Andrzej Szejna publicly acknowledged that there are problems with alcohol in the country.
