Kenyan athletes triumphed in the classic distance of 42.195 kilometers at the marathon in Varna. For men, the race was won by Shedrick Kimayo with a time of 2:24.02, and for women – Sheila Chebet with 2:40.35. Another Kenyan came in second for the men – Kennedy Rono with a time of 2:24.20 hours, and Bulgarian Nikolay Kaufman finished third with 2:38.12 hours.
For the ladies, a competitor from Kenya placed second again – Ruth Mbatha, with a time of 2:40.16. The Bulgarian Marinela Nineva, who won at this distance last year in Varna, finished in third place with 2:49.29 hours. A total of 179 athletes started in the classic distance of the marathon in Varna. The winners of the men's and women's races will each receive a cash prize of €1,500, the runners-up – 1000 euros each, and the third place finishers – 500 euros each.
418 competitors started in the half marathon, and in the distance of 10.5 kilometers – 532 athletes. The total number of participants in the race, including the 2-kilometer run, exceeds 1,200 people from 33 countries.
Mohamed Chabu from Morocco won the 21 kilometer event of the marathon in Varna. He finished with a time of 1:07.50. For women, the race was won by Valeria Dimitrova with 1:33.13 hours.
Yanislav Todorov and Pamela Eni won the 10.5 kilometer race at the marathon in Varna. They finished in 34.53 minutes and 38.09 minutes, respectively.
The youngest participant on the race tracks was 9-year-old Dimitar Georgiev, and the oldest - 77-year-old Remzi Narli from Turkey – both at 10.5 km. In the short distance, there was an 82-year-old participant, and three two-year-old children covered the distance in prams. Georgi Gavrilov and Vladimir Panovski ran the classic marathon at the age of 68.
