Switzerland beat Hungary 3:1 in their European Football Championship opener. “The Crusaders” secured their success before the break when they took a 2-0 lead through goals from Kwadwo Dua (left) and Michel Ebischer. After the break, Hungary pulled a goal back through Varga, and in stoppage time, Breel Embolo completed the final score – 3:1.
In the 12th minute "the crusaders" they managed to open with their first clean sheet. Ebischer slotted a pass through the center of the Hungarian defense with surgical precision and left Kwadwo Dua face-to-face with Peter Gulacci. The striker of Ludogorets showed no hesitation and scored 1:0 with a shot with his right foot. For Dua, it was the first goal with the team of the Swiss national team, for whom he earlier this month in control with Estonia.
The goal definitely embarrassed the Hungarians and until the 30th minute they failed to create anything memorable in attack.
Swiss keeper Jan Sommer's first intervention of the game didn't come until the 40th minute when centre-back Willy Orban headed in Dominik Soboslay's cross. Replays showed that Orbán was more in an ambush position, but the Slovenian referee brigade, led by Slavko Vinčić, did not flag one.
In the last seconds of the first half, Switzerland managed to strike a second blow. The footballers from the Alpine side played the ball in front of the penalty area of the Hungarians, and Ebischer with a wonderful shot from the arc in front of the penalty box checked Peter Gulacci for 2:0.
The second half started the way the first half started - with Switzerland pressing. In the 47th minute, Dan Ndoye got away with the ball in a clear position, and seconds later, Gulachi had to clear a dangerous shot from Dua for a corner. In the 54th minute, Ruben Vargas was also close to the goal, but once again Gulaci managed to save.
Hungary missed their best scoring opportunity in the 62nd minute. Roland Shalay crossed from the left flank, but Barnabas Varga, left uncovered, missed the goal with a header from the edge of the goal area.
Three minutes later, the Magyars repeated the exercise and this time managed to overcome Sommer. This time Dominic Soboslay crossed and Varga beat Ricardo Rodriguez to make it 1-2.
After the goal, Murat Yakin made changes to Switzerland's line-up and took off Kwadwo Dua and replaced him with Zeki Amdouni. The Swiss came close to a third goal in the 72nd minute, but Fabian Scherr's header from a corner kick went wide of the post.
However, the goalkeeper of RB Leipzig had nothing to do in the third minute of added time, when Breel Embolo took advantage of a very rough mistake by Willy Orban and scored with a transfer shot to make it 3:1.
In their next match of group "A" Switzerland will play Scotland, while Hungary face a tough test against Euro 2024 hosts Germany.
