Bozhidar Saraboyukov made a great last attempt and with 8.13 meters became the European champion in the long jump at the indoor championship in the Dutch city of Apeldoorn, BNR reported.
Before his victorious sixth attempt, the 20-year-old Bulgarian was moving in sixth place in the standings, having made a wonderful fifth attempt also over 8 meters, but with an insignificant foul of just over a centimeter.
Before that, Saraboyukov had jumped 7.94 from his third opportunity, and had also made three fouls in total. The happy Bulgarian did a backflip of joy after his last attempt, which brought him to the top of the standings. This is the first major success for Saraboyukov, who finished fourth in Istanbul with 7.97 meters. The gold medal is Bulgaria's 30th at the European Indoor Championships.
The last Bulgarian gold medal in the men's Euro Indoors was won by Petar Dachev in the long jump 25 years ago in Ghent 2000. The last title was won by Radoslava Mavrodieva in the shot put in 2019 in Glasgow.
The Bulgarian left behind Mattia Furlani from Italy and Lester Lescaj from Spain, who jumped a centimeter less than him - 8.12 meters each. Furlani won the silver medal, while the Spaniard remained third. In his last attempt, Furlani made 8.09, which gave the title to the Bulgarian.
