Gennaro Gattuso is the new coach of the Italian national team. This was confirmed by Gianluigi Buffon, head of the Italian Football Federation delegation, BTA reports.
"We have done a good job, the last details remain", Buffon told Italian state broadcaster RAI, speaking at the European Under-21 Championship, after being asked if Gattuso would be the new coach.
"The president and the entire federation had a busy few days, but I think we made the best choice," Buffon added.
Gattuso replaces Luciano Spalletti, who was fired after less than two years in the job.
Gattuso, who has 73 caps for Italy and was part of the 2006 World Cup-winning team, recently left Croatian club Hajduk Split by mutual consent. His team finished third in the country's top division.
