Bulgarian Prime Minister Rosen Zhelyazkov spoke out on the arrest of Vasil Dimitrov in Gaza, emphasizing that Israel has declared the area a military zone and is acting at its own discretion. In the context of the blockade of the Gaza Strip by Israel, which has been in effect for years and has been declared by the UN to be a violation of international law, there is a decision of the International Court of Justice in The Hague, which defines these territories as illegally occupied. Thus, the blockade itself, as well as the subsequent operation to seize ships with humanitarian aid from Israel, carried out in international waters, are controversial and raise serious questions. This was announced to Lili Marinkova in the studio “FACT“ and the program “Conversation“ by journalist Diana Hussein.
„The official reaction of the Bulgarian side to the arrest of Vasil Dimitrov in Gaza is, to put it mildly, „cautious“. The Israeli Foreign Ministry is also trying to minimize public comments, this time explicitly emphasizing that the participants in the action are alive and well. According to the Israeli authorities, all ships from the flotilla have been intercepted, while international media and the organizers claim that the fate of three ships remains unclear“, she added.
„The Israeli Foreign Ministry is trying to minimize public communications on the topic. This is an important signal, because any incidents would further worsen Israel's image in the world community. Otherwise, the purpose of the ships is to break the blockade of Gaza and deliver humanitarian aid“, Hussein added.
