I was quite surprised by Bulgaria's initial decision not to support the seizure of Russian assets in Belgium. Initially, about 110 billion euros were to be taken, with a total of about 210 billion euros frozen. Belgium rightly objected, because this depository - Euroclear - is like a huge bank safe in which different countries and institutions responsibly store billions. If this Russian money is taken, the depository will lose its reputation and go bankrupt. This is the main reason why the Belgians are resisting, and not so much because of legal problems. He announced this to Lili Marinkova in the studio “FACT“ and the show “Conversation“ journalist Ognyan Duskarev.
„Even if the Russians do sue in time, it will be in Western courts and there will be no problem for Belgium. The problem is the loss of trust in the depositary. Bulgaria made a sensible decision, especially since the European Central Bank and the International Monetary Fund expressed serious reservations about taking these Russian assets, which is why the idea failed. At the moment, the option remains the loan of 90 billion euros. Even Hungary voted “for“, while Sweden, Slovakia and the Czech Republic did not support it and will not participate financially“, the guest added.
„The question is how these 90 billion euros will be returned. The official thesis is that this will be done through reparations from Russia to Ukraine after the end of the war. I do not see how this will happen. Who will force Russia to pay 90 billion euros, given that Ukraine is losing the war, despite the enormous Western aid. If Russia wins, and this is very likely, I have not heard of a winner paying reparations“, Duskarev also said.
