French President Emmanuel Macron said today that NATO countries must react more strictly in case of new provocations by Russia, particularly in the airspace of Eastern Europe. He said this in an interview with France 24 television and Radio France Internationale (RFI), BTA reports.
"If someone provokes you again, you must react in a slightly tougher way", Macron said in New York, where he is participating in the UN General Assembly.
But according to him, there should be no opening fire on these actions by the Russian army. On this issue, he came into conflict with US President Donald Trump, AFP noted. Yesterday, Trump answered in the affirmative to a journalist's question about whether NATO countries should shoot down Russian planes in the event of a violation of their airspace.
According to the French head of state, NATO's collective response to several incursions by Russian drones into its airspace has been proportionate so far.
Denmark was forced to close Copenhagen airport on Monday due to the overflight of drones of unknown origin. Earlier this month, Poland, Romania and Estonia reported that their airspace had been violated by Russian drones.
