Chinese judicial authorities have sentenced 16 suspects to death for cyber fraud, illegal gambling, drug trafficking and prostitution in a border area between Myanmar and China, Chinese state television reported, quoted by Agence France-Presse, BTA reported.
Five of the 16 sentenced to death with two-year reprieves. The court in East Wenzhou also handed down 11 life sentences and 24 sentences of up to 24 years in prison. This is one of the most severe collective cases in recent years.
The convicted Min family and other criminal groups have carried out a series of criminal activities since 2015, including the establishment of cybercrime centers in the Kokang region of Myanmar, which borders China. The groups are responsible for the deaths of at least 14 people related to the cybercrime activities, of whom 10 were forcibly recruited and tried to escape, Chinese judicial authorities said.
