Syrian leader Ahmed Sharaa confirmed to Putin compliance with agreements with Russia - 1

Syrian President Ahmed Sharaa assured Russian President Vladimir Putin that he would comply with all existing agreements between Damascus and Moscow. This suggests that the two main Russian military bases in Syria remain safe, reports “Reuters“, quoted by News.bg.

Sharaa, a former leader of the Syrian branch of al-Qaeda and the man who overthrew his predecessor Bashar al-Assad, made his first visit to Russia since coming to power. At the beginning of the talks in the Kremlin, he stated in Arabic that “there are bilateral relations and shared interests with Russia, and we respect all agreements concluded with it. We are working on redefining the nature of relations with Moscow“.

Putin said that Russia was ready to support “interesting and useful principles“ already discussed between the countries related to the restoration of relations. The Russian president also congratulated Sharaa on holding parliamentary elections earlier this month, noting that they contribute to the consolidation of society despite the difficulties in the country.

The Kremlin specified that among the topics of the talks was the fate of the two main Russian bases in Syria - the Khmeimim air base in Latakia and the naval base in Tartus. Russia also has a presence at the Qamishli airport in the northeast of the country.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov confirmed that Moscow believes that Damascus wants the bases to remain on the territory of the country, and they can also be used for logistical support of humanitarian supplies to Africa. Syrian officials are seeking assurances that Russian aid will not be used to rearm Assad's forces. Sharaa also hopes Russia will help rebuild the Syrian army and offer economic concessions, including wheat supplies and compensation for war damage.

Sharaa's visit is particularly sensitive. Russia has backed Assad for years against rebels, including those who came to power last December under Sharaa's leadership. Assad's family now lives discreetly in Moscow. Sharaa will formally request Assad's extradition to stand trial for alleged crimes against Syrians, but Putin is unlikely to agree. Lavrov stressed that the asylum was granted due to the threat to Assad's life.

During his visit, Sharaa is also expected to discuss Israeli demands for the expansion of the demilitarized zone in southern Syria and the role of the Russian military police as a guarantor against future Israeli encroachments.

The Kremlin specified that there would be no joint press conference after the meeting.
