Twenty-three people were arrested in an hours-long standoff with Irish police, whose officers were pelted with fireworks, stones and other objects in another night of clashes during anti-immigrant protests in the capital Dublin, PA Media and DPA reported, quoted by BTA.

Two police officers were taken to hospital after being injured in clashes with demonstrators.

One was hit by a bottle and the other has a shoulder injury.

Hundreds of people gathered outside the entrance to a hotel for asylum seekers in an area in the west of the capital.

It was the third night in a row of demonstrations in that area of the city following the alleged sexual assault of an underage girl not far from the hotel early Monday morning.

A 26-year-old man, whose identity cannot be released due to Ireland's sexual assault laws, appeared in court on Tuesday in connection with the case.

Irish Justice Minister Jim O'Callaghan said yesterday that "there have been many arrests and there will be more".

He said the law would be applied with all its severity to those arrested and that law enforcement had responded professionally to the "hooligan violence".

Prime Minister Micheal Martin condemned the outrages and said there was "no justification" for attacks on police officers.

The protesters waved Irish flags, chanted anti-immigrant slogans and they threw objects.
