Heavy rains and strong winds hit much of Croatia tonight and yesterday, including the capital Zagreb, local media reported, BTA reports.
In Sisak, central Croatia, firefighters had to remove a fallen tree that blocked a road, the website “Index“ reported.
According to the Croatian State Hydrometeorological Institute, the storm hit the northeastern region of Slavonia around midnight, with wind speeds reaching around 90 km/h. 9.4 liters of rain fell per square meter in 24 hours. The bad weather caused damage to the power grid, leaving several settlements without power. Crews are on the ground working to restore normal power supplies.
A yellow weather warning has been issued for the Istrian peninsula and the Kvarner Gulf for today.
In the Adriatic city of Rijeka, heavy rain caused flooding and mudslides, while downed trees further disrupted traffic.
Rovinj received 130.6 mm of rain per square meter, a record for the region this year and one of the highest amounts recorded in Istria. The torrential rain caused water to leak from manholes in some parts of the city.
Firefighters were also busy in Zagreb, where strong winds caused chaos and downed numerous trees, state broadcaster HRT reported.
