Cyprus plans to initiate the creation of a regional organization for security and cooperation in the Middle East, which would promote stability in one of the most tense regions in the world. This was stated by President Nikos Christodoulides, quoted by Reuters, reports News.bg.
According to him, the goal is to build a platform for regional cooperation, which would resemble NATO or the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) in structure.
„If you want - a kind of NATO or a kind of OSCE for the Middle East - such an initiative would show how useful it can be to promote regional cooperation“, Christodoulides said during a conference in Nicosia.
The President specified that the country is already working on “maturing the necessary political conditions“ for the realization of the idea and stressed Cyprus' readiness to lead the initiative, using its strategic location as a diplomatic bridge between Europe and its southern neighbors.
Cyprus, a member of the European Union, has already proven its role as a humanitarian hub - the country has repeatedly served as an evacuation point for civilians fleeing conflict zones in the region, including Sudan.
The island has also provided a sea corridor for the delivery of humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip, initially through a temporary pier and later - in cooperation with Israel.
