Politico: EU cuts Russians' access to Schengen area, halts visa issuance

Exceptions include humanitarian reasons and citizenship of an EU country

The European Union may stop issuing multiple-entry Schengen visas to Russians this week, Politico reports, citing unnamed European officials.

“The EU is preparing to further tighten visa rules for Russian citizens, effectively ending the issuance of multiple-entry permits to the Schengen area in most cases,“ the publication states.

As the media outlet notes, this means that Russians will generally only receive single-entry visas.

The exceptions include humanitarian reasons and citizenship of an EU country. The new rules are expected to be adopted and implemented this week.

Politico points out that issuing visas remains a national responsibility, so the European Commission cannot impose a complete ban on entry for Russian tourists, but this could complicate the process.
