The US is facing widespread disruptions in air transport after a heavy snowstorm and global software updates for Airbus A320 aircraft led to 1,815 delays and 490 cancellations, FlightAware, a real-time flight tracking company, reported, Focus reports.

The most serious problems were at airports in Chicago, New York, Boston, Minneapolis and Detroit, according to information from CBS News.

The week began with warnings of extreme weather conditions and low temperatures. Airlines have been seeing major schedule disruptions since the weekend after the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) ordered thousands of Airbus A320 aircraft worldwide to undergo mandatory software updates.

JetBlue announced the cancellation of 74 flights today as part of a software update to some of its A320 and A321 fleet.

A severe snowstorm that hit the Midwest and Great Lakes region has already wreaked havoc on air travel since last week's holiday. The National Weather Service has issued a series of winter storm warnings for Sunday, covering areas from Montana to Ohio.

By Saturday evening, more than 1,400 flights had been canceled at Chicago airports, where up to 10 inches of snow was expected. Detroit airports reported more than 300 delays and dozens of cancellations as the storm continued to move through the region.
