Rebecca Greenspan: Next UN Secretary-General could be a woman - 1

Former vice president of Costa Rica and candidate for UN Secretary-General Rebecca Greenspan said that if equality prevails over discrimination, the next secretary-general will be a woman, Reuters reported, quoted by BTA.

The process to select a new UN leader began last week, with member states given the opportunity to nominate candidates to succeed Antonio Guterres on January 1, 2027.

Despite the UN's 80-year history as an organization for peace and cooperation, the post of secretary-general has never been held by a woman. Greenspan says this is inexplicable, given the high qualifications and experience of many women for the position.

Calls for a woman to be elected to the post are growing, with the next secretary-general likely to be from Latin America. This is due to the usual rotation principle for occupying the post between continents, with the Latin America and the Caribbean region now taking the place.
