Estonian leaders differ on the appointment of an EU special envoy for talks with Russia - 1

Estonian President Alar Karis and Prime Minister Kristen Michal have differed in their views on the need to appoint an EU special envoy for talks with Russia, Bloomberg reported.

Earlier, in an interview with Euronews, Karis called for the appointment of a special European envoy to resume contacts with Russia. He stressed that the chosen special envoy should be from a “major European country“ trusted by both Russia and Ukraine.

Mihal, for his part, said that direct negotiations with Russia were “inappropriate“ because “only pressure works with Moscow“.

The agency stressed that although Karis holds a largely symbolic position, the negative reaction to his proposal reflects concerns about the idea of resuming dialogue with Russia, which has become taboo in the Baltic states.
